New Year, Clear Lungs: 7 Resolutions for Better Asthma Control in 2026

These steps can help you take control of your asthma in the year ahead.

1. Change home air filters often

Replace home air filters often to minimize dust, dander, and other airborne irritants within your home. Depending on your environment and symptoms, you may need to replace the filters every few months. 

2. Avoid smoke and other airborne irritants

Stop smoking, and avoid secondhand smoke. Both trigger asthma flare-ups, making breathing difficult. When possible, also avoid other irritants like car exhaust fumes, manufacturing chemicals, and air pollution.

3. Clean your home regularly

Keep your home free of clutter, dust, and mold. This helps to optimize air quality and keep asthma symptoms at bay. Vacuum, clean bathroom floors and showers, and wash curtains, blinds, and rugs that collect dust or mold. Clean at least once weekly. 

Also, avoid harsh household chemicals that may worsen asthma symptoms. Choose mild, natural cleaning products instead.

4. Wash bedding and blankets often

Bedding and blankets can collect pollen, dander, and dust. Wash these items regularly to help lower your risk of allergy and asthma flare-ups.

5. Stay active daily

Staying active can reduce your risk of asthma attacks, especially during exercise, so gradually increase the intensity or duration of your workouts. Aim to stay active for at least 30 minutes most days.

Physical activity can also help you maintain a healthy weight, which is optimal for asthma symptom control. 

6. Adopt stress-reduction techniques 

Physical and emotional stress can trigger asthma symptoms. This New Year, adopt at least one stress-reduction strategy. Examples include: yoga, tai chi, gentle stretching, meditation, deep breathing exercises, and massage. 

7. Take medications as directed
